Student Handbook

Preparing for the Week

Photo IDs
You must bring a PHOTO ID — a driver’s license, state identification card, military ID, passport or school ID. You will need this for travel and at several Washington locations during your week. You may miss an activity without a photo ID.

News Releases
Enclosed in your Welcome Packet is a news release. If you submitted your local newspaper contact information on your application, the news release will be sent by Presidential Classroom to publicize your acceptance and upcoming participation in a Presidential Classroom program. If you did not include this information on your original application, you can send a completed copy to your newspaper or school paper. You may also download a copy, relevant to your selected program. Not only is this a good way to get recognition for your accomplishments, but it can also help generate support for your fundraising efforts. To access your week’s news release, go to the PC Pressroom, Student News Releases.

When you submit the news release to your local media, include your phone number so a reporter can contact you. Other relevant information may also be helpful – school activities, pictures, etc. Please send us a copy of any published articles.

Student Scheduling Form
Complete your travel and crossfire choices online by logging on to your account information with your student ID and last name. You need to return your Student Scheduling Form, included in the Welcome Packet, for us to meet you upon arrival. When you make your travel plans (at least four weeks in advance), complete the form and return it to us. We cannot be responsible for transporting you to the hotel if we have not received your travel information before your class begins. Also, check our Shuttle Schedule before you make your travel plans.

Also, record your Crossfire choices on the Scheduling Form. Refer to your Program Overview Brochure on your particular program for help on this.

Invite a Running Mate
Invite a friend to share the PC experience. Pass on the Running Mate Application that came with the Welcome Packet to a friend. If your friend participates in one of our programs, we’ll send you a free T-shirt!

Fundraising Ideas
If your school wishes to send several students to Presidential Classroom, you may want to plan joint fundraising activities and divide the proceeds among your group (with approval from your principal). Visit our fund raising section for ideas and suggestions.

UVA College Credit
The University of Virginia, one of the nation’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning, offers one credit hour for participation in Presidential Classroom programs. Students must register in advance with UVA. See the enclosed guidelines and application insert in your Welcome Packet for details.

Congressional Information
Research your U.S. Senators and Representative. You can find information online at www.house.gov or www.senate.gov. PLEASE DO NOT contact the offices in Washington about appointments - we are arranging those meetings for you.

To help you understand what’s going on in our nation’s capital, you may want to review the following resources:
