Student Handbook Student Affairs When you arrive in Washington as a Presidential Classroom Scholar, you will live in a community of people like yourself from across the United States and around the world. The following will help you get the most from your week in Washington. You will stay at the Georgetown University Conference Center, a Marriott hotel located on the historic campus. Students are housed four to a double occupancy room. Roll-a-way or inflatable beds are available upon request when you arrive at the hotel. We assign rooms by geographic distribution. No students from the same family, school or state will be housed together. We are unable to honor special rooming requests. While packing for your trip, remember: the baggage limits of your commercial carrier, limited closet space in the hotel room you will share with three other people, variable Washington weather and PCs dress code (page 7 and 8). One medium-sized suitcase and one carry-on bag should be sufficient. Clearly mark your name and address on all your luggage. For your convenience, we have included luggage tags with this packet. It is your responsibility to carry and load your own luggage onto the bus taking you to the hotel. DO NOT leave your bags for someone else to load. You must bring a PHOTO ID. This means a drivers license, state identification card, military ID, passport or school ID. You will need this ID for travel and at several Washington locations which require it for admittance. You may miss an activity without a photo ID. Please check in advance with your airline or Amtrak for their ID requirements. Put your name on everything! Chances of recovery are greater if your name is on your cell phone, camera, jackets, books, etc. DO NOT bring valuables. We recommend that you not leave anything of value in your rooms. Presidential Classroom cannot be responsible for the loss or theft of personal items. Tuition covers students accommodations, breakfast and dinner from Sunday dinner to Friday dinner during the week and all program activities. Students are responsible for lunch expense. However, students should have some extra money while at PC. Depending on travel plans, you may have the added expense of meals before or after the week. You also may need bus or cab fare between the airport and the hotel if you arrive early or late.Souvenirs are available at the Smithsonian Museums as well as our own student store. The student store offers sweatshirts, decals, pins, etc. A class photo will also be available for about $15. Students should not carry much cash. Most money should be in travelers' checks. Keep these in your possession while traveling. Automated teller machines (ATMs) are located in the hotel, on Capitol Hill and other locations. If you need money, the hotel will accept a check up to $100 made out to Georgetown University Conference Center. Presidential Classroom cannot facilitate any other monetary transfers. Please DO NOT wire money. We strongly recommend that you have health and accident insurance. That policy will be considered the primary carrier in case of accident or illness. Presidential Classroom will assume no financial responsibility for medical treatment of students. Make sure you provide us with your insurance information on your registration form before arriving at PC. Presidential Classroom welcomes students with special physical needs and makes every effort to accommodate them. Let us know of any concerns you have. Our staff nurse will also contact students and/or their parents to discuss specific issues or arrange for special medications. Because of the program's intensity, you should be in good health when you arrive. Bring enough required medications to last the entire week. We provide a refrigerator in the health clinic to store medication, if needed. Please notify PC's admissions office of any change in medical information prior to your attendance. If you have special dietary needs, you should stop by the Student Services Office after you register on Saturday to be sure we understand your requirements. << Back Table of Contents Next >> |
